The minimum legal gambling age in South Dakota depends upon the gambling activity:

In 1989, South Dakota was the first state to offer video lottery terminals (VLTs). Regulation of VLTs at bars and taverns is the responsibility of the South Dakota Lottery. Each retailer can have up to 30 machines per gambling license with a limit of 3 permits per operator. There are currently 1,325 such operators.

In the frontier town of Deadwood, children may accompany their parents in most casinos until 8 p.m. South Dakota is the only U.S. gaming jurisdiction which allows minors to be present while their parents gamble.

South Dakota’s American Indian tribes have negotiated and approved tribal-state compacts. These gaming compacts include a sliding scale for how many slot machines each tribal casino may have, specifically:

• 500 gaming machines at the effective date of the compact
• 600 gaming machines after two years
• 750 gaming machines after four years

South Dakota also has two pari-mutuel facilities with horseracing during the spring season, but do not offer slot machines at them. An additional racetrack facility offers dog racing and simulcast betting.

The first casinos in Deadwood, South Dakota opened on November 1, 1989. Local regulations require that all of the buildings in the downtown section to conform with the city’s authentic 1880’sarchitecture. Many of the Deadwood casinos are located in historic structures, but there are also some new structures that were designed to be compatible with the historic theme of thetown.

Deadwood is famous for being the home of James Butler Hickok, who was better known as Wild Bill Hickok. He was shot to death while playing cards in the No. 10 Saloon. The hand Wild Bill held atthe time he was shot was two pairs: black aces and black eights, and that hand is now commonly referred to as a “dead man’s hand.” Wild Bill is buried in the local cemetery along with CalamityJane, who was a well-known companion to Wild Bill. The old No. 10 Saloon is still operating today and you can gamble in the same spot where old Wild Bill met his demise!

Gaming regulations limit all of the Deadwood casinos to a maximum of 30 slot machines and no one person is allowed to hold more than three operating licenses. However, some of the operatorscombine licenses with other operators to form a cooperative which will look like one casino but actually they are several licensees operating under one name. The Deadwood Trolly runs ascheduled shuttle service to all of the casinos that operate from 7 am to 1 am weekdays and 7 am to 3 am on weekends. The cost is $1 per ride.

The state’s gaming laws originally limited blackjack, poker, let it ride and three-card poker bets to a maximum of $5, however, in July 2012 the law was changed to allow maximum bets of $1,000.
